Bought a 94 850, couple questions 850

Just bought a 94 850 with 116,000. I took it to the volvo mech. he check it out had to replace a vacuum line and fix a crack pvc hose... that was nearly a month ago a day after i bought it.. now when i first start the car mainly, and a few minutes after I smell a sulfer type foul ordor in the car.. and it seems to go away after the car warms up a little, but sometimes last longer. Any ideas on what this is?

Also I bought a remote for the car, but dosent seem to be working, do all the models support remotes?? I dont know if the remote is broken or its just my car never had a remote.

I am putting 92 fuel in the car per the owners manual.. do you think this is neccessary??

Thanks,
Rich

Regarding car odors, the smell of antifreeze can be somewhat funky. I wouldn't say it resembles sulfur, and it doesn't seem the most likely culprit. If you're familiar w/ that combination smell of antifreeze + a car's B.O., then you can rule it out.

Fortunately, I have no personal experience with the smell of a dying catalytic converter, but I've always heard that it can smell like "rotten eggs," which is about as close to sulfur as you can get!

Don't know that a C.Conv. could prompt any fault code b/c it's downwind of the O2 sensor? You've got me curious. We have a 1995 850, manual transmx & 200,000+ miles (and the original almost-everything, including the Catalytic Converter).

Actually never thought about that but u might be right about the cat. cuz the engine does run a little bass-y.... I thought the muffler might be starting to die, but it might be the cat. and the smell is like rotten eggs... like a eggy type smell, almost like a fart!!!

      Thanks

Go to www.volvospeed.com and look in the Repairs/Maintanence section. Once in "Bay 13", scroll down to lights and you'll find what you are looking for. They have the procedure listed step by step complete with pictures.

If you smell sulpher, it could be the brand of gas you buy or your air pump is not working very well. The next time you cold start your car, pinch the small air hose coming from your air cleaner box and goes down under the battery. You should be able to feel it pulse as the pump gulps air, if not it is time to look at the pump. The pump NOT working should trigger a check engine light.

If you have a turbo, stay with the 92 octane. Otherwise run with 89 octane.

The remote was an option for 84. Your car may not have one. All 850's have the security feature with the blinking light, I think. To program the remote, turn your key to ON and back to OFF 5 times, on the 5th ON press the lock button. If the door locks, you are golden, if not, the fob can go with the spare parts bin.

Yeah, it has the blinking light... It may not have the option. This sux as far as the fuel problem.. the codes were just read by the volvo mech. nothing about a air pump... however I dont want to go back and have him drain me for another 300.00 for figuring out its a vacuum hose or something.. I think I might just deal with the smell as long as its not going to harm anything.. could it possibly be the cabin filter?? OHHH forgot to tell you, before he fixed the pvc all the fumes from it were coming in the car when the fan was on... Could these fumes possibly made the cabin filter dirty and thats what we are smelling??

Your car didn't come with a cabin filter. You should put one in. Go to FCPGroton.com and order a filter and the plastic holder, it drops right in. Volvospeed.com shows you how to do it.

If you smell rotten eggs, make sure your air is pointed to the outside air and not recycled inside air. With the window open a little and the recycle switch on, you will be drawing air in from the back of the car. The center vent has an extra wheel to mix outside air also, open it.
Change your brand of gasoline and see if the smell goes away, so gasolines contain a lot of sulphur. When a Volvo mechanic is not sure about something, don't go back. You can check and reset all of your own codes, including the service light. It's fun!
