ONE DAY PAINT/EARL SCHEIB PAINT 850

Hi ,
HAs anybody tried the ONE DAY PAINT or EARL SCHEIB PAINT? Just wanted to find out if they are good. I don't need a car show shine, just wanted to have a decent paint job on wife's car since it got hit(minimal) on the right side. Local body shop (detailer) estimated $1200 to do the whole right side(body works /paint) and paint the hood, (using manufacturer's color) as well since it's starting to show oxidation while the ONE DAY or Earl Scheib guys will paint the WHOLE car in the same amount using their own paint apparently slighty different shade from original Teal color. Thing is, only exterior surface is being painted and my concern is would it look odd if door jambs and interior has slight different shade from exterior?
Which is the best bet? I plan to upgrade car 2 yrs from now.
thanks a lot

The last time I went to Earl Scheib for a paintjob, it was a disaster. They left the windows down and wanted to charge me extra for painting the interior. Good Luck, Fred.

....and if you DON'T leave the windows down, they'll paint the GLASS! 850

LOL!

Really.... you WILL regret this idea!

The cheap guys won't do what you can't see. They woun't do the prep sanding, priming or surface cleaning. The "slightly different" shade will probably show up in the door frames. This will brand your car and reduce the selling price. I'd go with the body shop but there's no guarantee there either. Look at the finished cars closely in their shop and try to get some references. You've got an upscale car. You don't want it looking like an old Taurus. Your wife will NEVER repeat NEVER let you forget it! Good luck....

Used to hear a joke back when I was in college in the old days (70's) that "Earl Scheib would paint any car for $39.95 including the bumpers". The key to a good paint job is the prep and these cut rate joints skimp big time. You may ask around. A lot of outstanding painters have left dealer body shops and work on their own for less $$$ as they don't have the trememdous overhead.

In 1984 purchased a used volvo 164e which had been repainted by Earl Scheib a year or so before I bought it. It was about a $300 job then, based on the receipt I found. Within a year large flakes of the paint started coming off. The car was already 12 yr old when I got it but it would have looked better if it had never been repainted so poorly. If you later want to have a decent job done on your car it will be extra to undo the cheap job.

Ask them how much buffing and prep work is done on the "one day" paint job!! Is ANY chrome removed?
If you ask a chain to do really good work, it will cost more than an auto body shop and not look as good. IMHO

Those cheepo places will do a lousy job of masking and prep, which will destroy any resale value.

You pay for what you get.

Quality is the only bargain.

Have you ever gone to a McDonalds and gotten a really great Big Mac and then go to a different one and gotten a rotten one?

No personal experience but I've heard Earl Scheib is about the same. Being a chain "fast food" paint shop all depends on the actual person doing the job. Although I think basically you get what you pay for and I have heard stories of peeling paint. I have also heard they do better when there is no rust or body damage.

That said it is very hard for a body shop to match colors on any car that has been out in the sun for any part of its life. Even if they use the same paint code from the manufacturer. I would think especially the clear coat covered teal (I have same color!)

For me I would probably go with the body shop. Probably better paint job and won't be bothered by mis-matched paint in all the spots Earl misses (around trim, doors, truck hood, etc). Trade in / sale value in two years with 200K+ won't be affected much either way by paint, unless cheap Earl paint makes car look like it got totaled.

Just my 2cents

"That said it is very hard for a body shop to match colors on any car that has been out in the sun for any part of its life. Even if they use the same paint code from the manufacturer."

using the same paint code makes it imposible..the paint has to be colour matched to whats on the car AFTER the new paitn has dried..a GOOD body shop will do that...

for the money being talked about i recon you would be better buying a gun (at least a devilbis) anda compressor and going it yourself...least you will take the time to do the prep right and a well preped job with a slightly iffy spray will look far better in a year than a well sprayed job on iffy prep...

this from a guy who spent about 500 hours on a spray job on a motorbike (tank, side panels, front guard and tail) - about 10 hours spraying the rest sanding, filling, guide coating and polishing....looked reaaaaaal nice till i threw it down the road...
