Our 1998 v70 GLT is making a pronounced whining when the steering wheel is turned, especially when stopped or at low speeds. All fluids in the PS reservoir are full. Does this sound like the PS pump or should I be checking other parts in the steering. Also, if it is the pump, how difficult is the replacement repair?

Before you start spending money, refresh the PS fluid with synthetic tranny fluid.
You'll be surprised at the results.

My dealer wanted to replace my pump!! That was 5,000 miles ago. When he told me the cost, he was also going to replace the rack at the same time, at about $1500, I took my car home. The pumps seldom fail. Usually it is time to flush the fluid and put some new stuff back in.

My pump is giving me a bit of trouble too. Leaks a little around the top (which I think is just gasket) but sometimes turning harder then normal and sometimes normal. Never changed the PS fluid before but willing to give it a shot before I try replacing or more likely just dealing with.

Whats the best way to change?

Go to the grocery store and buy a turkey baseter. the tube with a rubber ball on one end. Pump the fluid out and replace it with new, run the power steering a bit, and pump/refill again. Simple, but slow. There is no drain plug.

Did you have to replace the rack as well? After flushing the pump did your whining stop? What were some of the symptoms for your car?

What noise? The "pump" noise went away and the steering got easier after a flush with Mobile1 ATF. There is still a weep at the rack, but it dries faster than it weeps, so I am keeping the rack until it really dies.
