Identifying DTC codes from an OBDII Scanner S70

Here is a great site. Just put in the code and you'll get the description of the problem. http://www.actron.com/code_lookup.php

VADIS for the '98 lists only 11 or 13 (can't remember which) DTC codes total. That should help narrow down problems with our cars, or maybe that's not enough...don't know.

Thankyou, that is something I would actually use from time to time.

      Mark,
I just got back from Autozone to clear my CEL. How, where can I translate the P number to the Pocket Data Booklet published by Volvo?
I had a P0302 - misfire on #2 and a P0108 - MAP related? None of the numbers in the PDB are lower than 111, no zeros allowed, and the highest number is 555.

        Klaus,

I put the P0108 code into the Actron site mention at the beginning of this thread and this is the results. I really don't have a complete understanding of the jargon of all the different code formats, so I am not sure if this helps.

When I tried to cross ref the P0108 definition of MAP, all I could come up with was Manifold Air Pressure too high. An electrical connector right behind the pass side turn signal came off it's connection to the pass fender, but I don't know what that is for. The rubber was cracked and I taped it up with electrical tape and I didn't push it back together again correctly.
It is so frustrating, having a 1995 with it's dumb little boxes giving correct info and a 1998 with unreadable codes - unless you go to the dealer and spend $$$ for a Volvo code reader!

Well the P0302 is easy enough. Volvo has basically two kinds of misfire codes that are cylinder specific. Ones that denote excessive emmissions, that would be a 452 in this instance, and ones that indicated possible TWC damage and they should cause the MIL to flash. Now as far as a cross reference of some sort that is going to be tough. I have yet to find one and I have a couple of different scanners in my shop, one does generic OBDII stuff and the other is Volvo specific and gives only Volvo codes. So you know what I would do but that does not help you out much. The only thing you can do on the MAF code is guess (I hate to do that) that it is your typical 850 MAF code, 121. The only other thing that I can tell you that you might run up against is the manufacturer specific "P" codes. If you come across a P code that has something other than a 0 as the first number in the sequence then it is manufacturer specific and you really need a tool that reads the factory Volvo codes to decipher it. I will look around and see if I can come up with something. The heck of it is Volvo has no interest in the generic codes so they will not lift a finger in this endeavor. When I talk to my buds in the dealership about "P" codes they look at me like I have three heads or something.

I'm glad someone I respect on this board got something out of what I posted. Personally I'm looking for a decent scanner that can not only read the codes but clear them. Don't want to pay to much. Any suggestions?

There are a few good ones out there and more new ones everyday. I will take a look at some literature that I have at work in the morning, in the mean time this is something I saw on one of the other boards and have been eyeballing for a week or two now. Looks like if you have a lap top it could be a fairly inexpensive way to go.
