ABS Control Module: Where's the recall? V70-XC70 1998

Given the number of these things that have failed and that it is a safety related item, I'm surprised the government didn't force a recall and make Volvo fix all of them. . . . or is that asking too much?

Mine failed shortly after the OEM warranty and has been null ever since.

I have found the link to they guy who fixes them. Just curious about why they were never recalled by Volvo.

Mine too. '98 v70 glt. ABS and traction control are on the same module and have intermittent failure. Prefer no ABS as I was almost in a serious accident when it was working. Downhill with "all season" tires with snow over ice. I was able to steer safely but would have rather stopped. I do miss the traction contol though.

Volvo extended the coverage on them to 100,000 miles and that is probably about as good as it gets. Why they have not done it is because the numbers do not support it. Trust me the last thing any manufacturer wants is to have the NTSB or any other goverment entity step in and tell them how it is going to be. When this happens it is all over but the tears and you are talking about a mandatory recall. What you will see before this happens is a voluntary service campaign. We have not seen that yet so I would have to say that the bean counters that keep track of this stuff have not thrown any red flags about it yet. Obviously they are watching it though as they have bumped the coverage to 100K.

100K mile warranty on ABS control units? Says who? I work at a dealer and have never heard of that. Note: It must be in writing somewhere IF really covered. Being that we see these often, now with S80s also and dealing with extended warranty companies, IF it was under a longer warranty I think they'd know that.

As for safety, any car still stops normally w/o ABS so the car really isn't un-safe w/o it. Matter of fact, my cars w/o ABS and good tires stop faster in snow than newer cars with ABS. I would never buy that feature if it was an option.

I've never heard about any extended warranty on ABS units either. Since I'm now at 110K mi., I guess it's irrelevant. However, I am interested, as I bet many others are, in some proof.

I don't live in snow, just 33" of rain a year. And since my last car of 14 years had no ABS, I don't miss it.

But it irks me that so many of these things were faulty and it is a safety item and Volvo makes a big deal regarding safety. I repaired a new Dolby surround module in my car that had numerous cold solder joints and several no-solder joints. The local service manager at the dealer said the ABS units were inflicted with the same thing.

          C'est la vie

Luckily there's a guy (he offers his services on eBay) who is very reputable who can rebuild the units and save you bookoo's of $$
