Getting Ready for a Cross-Country car trip S70 1998

Hi all,

I'm getting ready for a 3000 mile cross country trip to Canada, and I'm trying to make sure our drive is problem-free. The 1998 S70 base 5 speed we have owned for 1.5 months now was dealer-maintained by PO very religiously, which is good and bad - some things not on the Volvo schedule have not been done such as coolant renewal, but at least flame trap etc have been checked and no oil leaks. Brakes were done last spring with bleed and renewal of brake/clutch fluid, new battery and tires recently too.

We had a pre-purchase inspection at an indie Volvo place and the only thing they came up with was that the serpentine belt was going to need replacing soon.

So here is my list of things to do befor the trip, let me know if I am missing something! We will be driving over mountains and probably running the A/C constantly.

- coolant drain, flush and refill with Volvo coolant/distilled water
- oil change with Mobil1 and Volvo filter
- drain and fill transmission fluid (gearbox) with Volvo fluid
- replace serpentine belt (already received belt from IPD)
- check non-functioning cruise control for DIY repair (I hope!)
- rotate and balance tires
- check spark plugs and wires, replace if needed

Good list. By all means, check out the two switches for the CC above the pedals.
Buy another cup holder for a dollar and hang it from the glove box door, it will come in handy. Get a small cooler for drinks to put in the back seat where it can be reached. Clean the windshield and headlight glass with RainX and wax the front of the car where the midwestern bugs kill themselves on your nice paint. Make sure your spare is pumped up. And buy gas in Nevada!
If you have car problems crossing Iowa, let me know and I will swap cars with you. Des Moines is only 4 hours south of here. Oh, keep to the speed limits around construction areas, the fines are doubled/tripled and the cops love that.
    Have fun,

    Klaus

Ah yes got the rain-x too, I'll have to remember to get to that before we go! I've never used it before, but read good things about it.

Oh and we will have 3 cats in a dog cage in the back seat meowing to keep us company :P

A/C is freezing cold in this car, no need for a recharge this one!

Extra cup holders and garbage bags are a good idea, thanks.

If I can remember to, I'll take some photos and post an account of our cross country (well actually inter-country) saga. We made it down here in a rickety uHaul truck so the way back will be far more comfortable.
