S70 Door locks S70 1998

I have a 1998 s70 and both rear door locks stopped working within a week of each other, they will close with the alarm key button but will not open when I unlock all doors

When was the last time the battery in your remote was changed? Check on that first before any other extremes.

Maybe a broken REPL (Red Evil Plastic Lever).
The symptom of a broken REPL is: Locks but it won't unlock with the remote control or with the door mounted switch. You can unlock it by pulling the lock button with your hand.
    Is this your case?
When the one on my wife's 98 V70 broke, I documented the procedure to repair the lock assy. Nobody has done the repair tough. It is extremely difficult.
I believe I have some of those locks on hand.

Here's the link to the repair procedure.

I just finished repairing the REPL yesterday and it works! Thanks Vitor for the illustrations. I did take a picture of the shaved pin for your use should you need to update the procedure since you did not have a picture.

I had to use a blow torch to get the "L" shape lever hot enough so to embed it to the REPL. I'm amazed that the plastic, once cooled, adhears well to the added metal lever. I had to redo the procedure twice because I made the lever to long. Nevertheless, I feel the modified piece is better than the original due to the lever being metal oppose to a skimpy plastic. I wonder if you are to buy a new one if Volvo has updated the REPL or they are using the same one. If not, it will be just be a matter of time before it breaks again.

      Thank You Vitor

Your sintoms sound correct, but your pictures make the job look hard, you do not think it maybe a fuse,or how can I double check before I start ripping panels off

Vitor is probably right. You will still have to take a door panel off and then using your fob, watch the relevant parts work/not work. It could also be a relay or two, but don't ask me which ones.

Are you hitting "open" on the remote twice? Once opens the front, two times opens all of them.

Let us isolate the problem first. Make sure the electrical lock mechanism works first before we look at the remote.

Use the inside driver arm rest unlock lever to test. Put your ear close to the locking door mechanism to the door in question. You should hear the locking motor when you flip the lever both ways. If the door either locks or unlock, we know we are getting current to the motor. If you are able to lock, but not unlock, then it is most likely the dreaded REPL. When you press the unlock button and hear the motor turn but the door is still locked, the REPL is most likely the culprit. I had to replace both left rear and right rear mechanism. First I bought the left lock mechanism and later tackled the right using Vitor's instructions.

Now if you determined the above works, and when use your remote and the locks don't work, then it is most likely something else and not REPL.
