ABS & TRACS OFF lights on at the same time... S70 1998

I drive a 1998 S70, 114K miles. Lately the TRACS OFF and ABS lights have been coming on at the same time and going off at the same time. Sometimes they come on when you start the car up and don't go off at all, then you'll restart the car after a trip and they'll stay on for 10mins and go off... then they might come back on 5 mins later and then go off after a minute. It's really random and doesn't seem to have any logic behind it. Sometime they won't come on for 2 days, but then the next day they will be back on and off, on and off. The last person to read the codes said that none were produced, I'm not too sure of that though.

I've heard about this happening to other cars, but not Volvos. Is this some sort of electrical gremlin? The car still keeps accurate mileage and nothing seems wrong when I use the brakes (ABS still seems to work). What gives?

ABS & TRACS OFF lights on at the same time... S70 1998

All the ABS control units (Installed on 96 and newer 850, 70 series and S80 models) will eventually fail after they reach 65,000 miles or 5 years. The average is 85,000 miles and/or 6 years for failures.
The erratic ABS light and/or no trouble codes is an indication of a defective ABS unit.
A dealer will charge from $60.0 to $120.00 to diagnose the problem and about 95% of the cases the mechanic will recommend to replace the ABS control unit.

Here's more information on this issue and a replacement alternative.

I guess it's a good sign that it lasted this long?

Yes, your unit lasted a lot longer than the one on my wife's 98 V70. It failed over 3 yrs. ago.
My daughter's 96 850 failed about 2 yrs. ago.
My 99 S80 T6 failed about a year ago.
See the pattern? The newer they are the sooner they fail.

Vitor is good and honest. Your ABS module is on the fritz. Remove it and mail it to him. Best deal in the country.
