What is 'white' engine? 850

Sorry if this is a totally obvious question but...
I've seen the term 'white engine'used, can someone define what this is?
Maybe they are really painted white (haven't seen those!), though I'm thinking it's a term like 'blueprinted engine'.
Other color engine designations?

What is 'white' engine? 850

It refers to the aluminum block DOHC engines (unpainted aluminum). The old Volvo engines (iron block) were painted red, therefore those are known as the "Red" engines.

Yup. I guess "silver block" would be more accurate, but "white block" makes sense as you use the term and compare the engines more often.
