odometer tampering??? 850

As mentioned in my other post, "1994 vs.1995", I am considering purchasing a used 1994 850. It was originally sold in Canada and both the spedometer and odometer are in Km. The car is now in USA. A carfax report on this car ends with the following entries:

4/26/03 232,751 California DMV
5/06/03 232,815 Passed emissions inspection
6/24/04 274,728 Service Facility

The odometer reads 238,140km. It seems crazy that the car would be driven 40,000km in just over a year. It also seems crazy that these guys would roll back the odometer, but they do work on cars....not volvos....

Basically I don't think there was any tampering, but could this ever show up as a problem in the future? Will it show up as odometer rollback on future carfax reports if the next entry is a lower mileage? Should I try to get a hold of the dealership that worked on the car 6/24/04? Am I freaking out over nothing?

Tell me how it is,
CineMan

For '93-'95 models with the diagnostic ports under the hood near the ECU box, check the actual mileage using the following procedure:

    1. Switch ignition on

    2. Connect the fly wire to socket - A7

    3. Push button 5 times

    4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
    - press the button once when LED is still on
    - wait for LED to go out and come on again
    - press the button once when LED is still on
    - wait for LED to go out and come on again
    - press the button once when LED is still on
    - read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles

    5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

Pass on this one and look for a 95. Why do you want to look at Km all of the time? Or are you like Tina and expecting to move to Canada?

I am confused. Shouldn't this calculate to about 25,000 miles? Why do you think this is excessive?

What often happens with Canadian cars in km's is that SOME garages will report the apparent reading (in km's) which usually get input as miles incorrectly, and SOME will convert to miles and put in the "actual" mileage! I bet that's what has happened here.

To me it looks like that latest reading is an error. 40k kilometers is about 65k miles in one year - seems unusual, and probably the service station simply screwed up! Maybe they thought they were converting to miles and went in the wrong directing (multipkied by 1.6 instad of divided)?

I wouldn't worry about it really.

Tina, please check your math! 40k km is 25k miles, not terribly unusual for one year.

1995 turbo sedan, 132k miles, the best car I have ever driven (and that includes BMWs, V8 MBs, Porsche, and Acura)

1994's true (computer) mileage can be read by yourself under the hood using the primitive code reader under the hood. Search posts and you should be able to find out how to do it. This cool feature is on '93-94 only I believe. Good luck! btw I read mine and it was about 500 miles off from the odometer (at 107k miles)

    Pass.. and be happy 850

Whole clusters are easily replaced, so pass.

From your question I can sense you're freaking out over the odometer reading. Trust your sixth sense, if you feel uneasy about this car, pass and find another one.

There are tons of great 850's out there, be patient and you'll find it

    hi,
a volvo dealer can read the true milage off the cars computer if you want them to. this reading can not be tampered with and will tell you if the odometer is correct or not.
bear in mind many 850's suffer from broken odo meachanism gears which can cause the milage to be out...

    steve.
