1994 vs. 1995 850 1995

I am trying to decide between two used volvo 850's. One is a 1995 turbo with 130,000 miles and the other is a 1994 with about 190,000 miles but that has been better taken care of and maintained.

A few questions: What kind of mileage are 850's capable of? I know 240's can go like 500,000 miles and of courseit's all about maintenance. Are there any pros/cons to either of these years alone? For example, I know 850's built after 1995 don't have the underhood led code reader. Are there any major differences/improvements between a 1994 and 1995 850?

Thanks!

Keep looking. I am partial to 95 Turbos, no ABS problems that year for some reason.
194,000 miles by a little old lady???

Well I have to admit the 1995 comes with some baggage. The check engine light is on, but the guy says the mechanic told him it is just stuck on for no reason (??). It will need to have the belt, water pump, etc... done plus comes with bald tires and non-working A/C (he's alergic to it, ha), who knows what else, he mentioned racing!

The '94 I haven't seen yet, but is described as "mint condition" and "full pwr, fully functional, clean title, clean in and out, motor runs like a champ, driven by a old lady the whole time. ORIGINAL OWNER.... Sounds too good to be true and probably is, but I will see in 45 minutes....

Don't buy the '95!! This guy seems like a real jerk. Anyone who brags about "racing" their car and has an "allery" to a non working 850 ac system should be avoided. You're looking at some major repairs. The '94 seems like a much better deal but it will be r e a l l y slooooooow "old lady" car. Make sure you put some freeway miles on the car to warm the tranny up good. Shift from reverse and drive a few times and check for any clunks. Check for burned tranny fluid. Maye sure she doesn't live in Pasadena. Good luck.

There are certainly many 300K - 400K examples on this board. As you mentioned, I think its all about regular maintenance. I'm not sure that there are many differences between 94 and 95 other than the fact that 95 Turbo's came standard with side air bags.

Its a tough call between the two cars that you are looking at but if you can find proof of regular oil changes, transmission fluid changes, and appropriate timing belt changes you are well on your way to a good car.

By the way, I have a 95 855T with about 125K and have been thrilled with the car.

    Good luck.

You should look at what work is needed on each. Unless there is a major specific problem that will prevent your safe use of it, I would take the turbo due to the lower mileage. Many Volvos go well beyond 130K. Although some Volvos, Mercedes, etc. run beyond 200,000, this would be unusual unless the car had largely suburban/highway driving. I've had 2 Volvos and a Saab that went to 200,000 but then had catastrophic failures like a broken valve or trans failure that would not be worth fixing. Those all had more city than suburban/highway use. Between 120000 and 200000 there were increasing numbers of repairs, though none very serious. My current 95 850 has 125000 and is just beginning to need first-time attention to non-routine things such as spring seats, wheel bearings, oil seals.

The one with the better service records is the better choice. I have 2 1995 855 GLTs. One has 215k, the other 165k. The one with 215k had every record back to the window sticker. The other was well-maintained, but the one with 215k is the one I trust for family trips. Like location in real estate: records, records, records in used Volvo buying(if you can deal with 168 horses versus a potential 260 horses with a $600 chip in a turbo/T-5/R).
