Shift lock override does not work all the time 850 1996

Shift lock override on my transmission only work sometimes. At other times I have to disengage it manually. I appears that it begin to work after a long highway run and tend to fail when I don't drive a lot.
Any ideas?

    it could be two different problems. the microswitch is probably bad, since you dont mention other electrical problems, if you have inop windows or abs and srs lights staying on at the same time it could be the ignition switch.
