Struts replacement? 850 1995

Hello all,

I’ve got a 1995 850 GLT with 145,000 miles and am starting to have problems with my car. I’ve gone to my mechanic 3 times in the last month with multiple problems. My car was running fine until I took it to the mechanic to get for its 150,000 mile check up. After getting it back I kept on hearing a loud knocking sound like someone was hitting a hammer under my foot every time I accelerated and the knocking would get faster and faster as I pushed on the gas. I took it back in and he said it was my compressor was shot. But I just had my compressor replaced six months ago. He said that they were not properly installed and I should get both of them replaced again. Hard to swallow because it put me back about a grand. So I then got the car back and was confronted with another problem. The car shudders violently when I try to go in am idle at a stop light. I called the mechanic and he said to just put sugar in the gas tank to “loosen up the pistons.” Now my car won’t start anymore and after calling my mechanic again he said that probably the struts??? need to be changed. Wanted some advice from other Volvo owners with similar cars/problems?

Quite a nightmare ........ If you really did put sugar in your tank as your "mechanic" suggested the fuel filter is probably now plugged up. There's an old story that sugar in the tank would ruin an engine but I've also read that it doesn't dissolve in gas so hopefully your filter got it all. Looks like you're looking at spending a few more dollars but find someone who is a honest capable car mechanic preferably one that knows Volvos. Don't take it back to this guy !!!! You don't deserve this sort of abuse. Check all of the electrical plugs in the engine compartment. He's so incompetant that he may have only partially plugged in some connector and it fell out.

Go to your mechanic's house late at night and just shoot him. All your problems will be over.

I would try Splenda. I hear it is better than sugar.
