what should I change to get better gas mileage..i have a list of things to look at but 850 1995

I have been getting pretty bad gas mileage for a while now and since gas prices for premium are crazy, i was thinking what can i change to definetly get better mileage. The car is a 95 850 turbo w/124000 miles and I changed plugs, filter, wires and cap/rotor about 20000 miles ago.

I am not getting any CEL or any codes from the engine module in the A2 socket. But i have read a lot that changin the MAF,fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump usually makes a diference on the car for the better.

IF i have no codes or Cel, is changing the maf or FPR a waste of money or would I notice a diference in the mileage with changing the things and making the price of parts up with the difference with the increase in mileage..

Another thing..do I still have to use the OBDii scanner to get any codes if don't a CEl

Thx

Having a clean air filter makes a big difference. So does cleaning out the throttle body, just be very careful you don't plug up any small holes while doing it. Check tire pressure, too. Try to keep the tranny in S around town and E on the higway.

thanks for your response...

I have cleaned the throttle body a couple of times with a rag and I am not sure but I might have sprayed some throttle body cleaner in there..once..this was maybe couple of thousand miles ago..could this have caused a problem somewhere..
not sure if TPS got messed up..does TPS effect the mileage in anyway..

my air filter is pretty clean..

The other thing that i have noticed is that the fuel gauge is not very accurate and seems to drop a lot more..than what the gas tank has..

thanks again

To realistically get your mpg, don't rely on your on board computer. Use the trip meter and divide by the gallons you pump in. My 850 had a bad fuel level sending unit so that the computer thought I was always 2 gallons lower than I really was. Don't forget to zero your computer once in a while, too.
The TPS can make a big difference in your mpg. So could a bad O2 sensor. Let a shop check them out, don't just throw parts at your car hoping that will cure the problem. A $50 part buys you a lot of gas.

Klaus,

When looking at posts I've always looked for your responses first....they have been right on the money each time. I do have one silly question...why S in town? To keep it out of overdrive????

Thanks,
John

S doesn't keep the tranny from overdrive, it allows for higher revs to get to speed faster. 3/4 throttle to get to normal speed is better for milage than 1/2 throttle for a longer distance to achieve the same speed. E will reduce unwanted down shifting on the highway.

What sort of mileage are you getting? Turbos usually get a bit less then us non-turbo types. My '94 855 5-speed gets about 30 mpg and my '93 854 auto gets 27-28.

Have you changed all filters? Air is a big one and don't forget fuel & oil.

And there is always driving habits and things like windows open or AC on that effect mileage.

I remember a post where someone said "stop complaining about your mileage and enjoy the ride". I concur with this statement, but I get 23.1 mpg in regular commute of 90% highway miles at 78 mph, windows up no a/c. I never stomp on the gas, but maybe I should slow down. Seems like I should do better, but I'm not complaining. I thought I remember someone saying they avg'd 29-29mpg at 80mph on a long trip. 95 T5 150k
