Volvo has not used a carburetor since the early 70's in this market. To clean the throttle valve you remove it (4 bolts) and clean it with a nylon brush and some brake spray cleaner, reinstall with a new gasket and you are done.

Volvo also sells a throttle body cleaning fluid...best and safest I think but it might cost a bit. Don't clean a '99 and later with brake cleaner...there is a plastic potentiometer in it that will be ruined. Only for '98 and earlier can you use strong solvents.

Hi,
Just for the record re: Volvo has not used a carburator in the NA market since the early 70`s. Actually, Canadian 240`s used a single carb(Zenith) in the years 80-81. I`m not sure why tho` my wife`s 81 240 was carburated while my beautiful 81 242(deceased but lovingly remembered, total writeoff when my wife hit a deer. I loved that car but I love my wife way more!!!)was fuel injected.
Cheers!
Rich
