uncomfortable front seat is too soft - need help V70-XC70 2002

My driver's seat is too soft, hence painful on long trips. Until I took my Ford Expedition on a 7 hour trip with only one brief stop and realized when I arrived that I felt no pain, I figured I was the problem. Now I know it is the seat. Bought car new, weigh 170lbs, 5'10" - how can I get the seat cushion firmer? My guarantee runs out soon and I have an upcoming 4,000 mile trip, and I'd rather drive the Volvo but need to do something to the seat in the next week or two. I actually don't think that it has deteriorated from when it was new, rather that it was just always too soft. My wife's 2000 V70 is also too soft. Has anyone else tried to fix this from underneath without taking the upholstery off? Did it work? Is there a dealer fix?

If you are really interested, I can give you some directions on how to take the seat out and remove the seat covers. You can then modify the foam, or insert carpet pads to stiffen things up. Will take about 2 hours to remove and disassemble seat and about the same to put it back together.

The PO on my car left some dastardly stains that did come out when I washed the seat and backrest covers.

My best recommendation is to trade the car with your younger son for his 1999 V70. Barring that, find a couple slightly different postures that you like and program them into the seats memory. Then switch it around every hour or so.

Klaus may have something with his suggestion to adjust the tilt and height of the seat. The Expedition, to the best of my memory, has you sitting a bit more upright. If you need more room for your head, just pop open the sunroof!

Strange, someone else was recently complaining that their V70 had seats that were too hard... whereas I find my '98 S70 to be "just right" :)

I don't think there is much you can do to firm up the seats, unless they are softer than other cars of the same model (perhaps the support springs are not good?) in which case you may eb able to replace the seats with new ones. You could try out a '98 seta and see if it's more to your taste maybe they changd them later- and I have no idea if you can install the older seats into your car.

A cheaper and seasier solution may be to make/buy pads made of closed-cell foam or possibly "memory" foam. You could insert a layer under the upholstry to increase the firmness of the seat and lower back. Call an industrial upholsterer about that ior think about doing it yourself. Some companies specialize in refurbishing auto interiors they may be able to help.

I'm the one who complained about my seat being too hard. The person who owned it before me was that "two tons of fun" in Sideways, the wine film. I can tell looking at the seat cusion and pushing my hand down on it, that the foam padding has lost some or all of its resiliency. When the weather improves I will remove the seat and covering and replace it. In the meantime though, I will experiment with different seat postions as Klaus suggested. Dick

Why don't you and the guy that complained that his seat is too soft just ship each other your seats and be done with it? Now, that's funny....don't care who you are, that's funny!

    Congratulations! V70-XC70 2002

    Peter,
This is the first post I have seen which complains about the seats being too soft. I weigh in at about 225 and find them very comfortable, sorry. There are only springs in the bottom of the seat cushions which can't be modified. Try raising the rear of the bottom cushion to help shift the load forward in the seat.
