Emission test passed w/out non-continuous monitors set 850 1997

I have a 97 850 GLT. I have been trying (for the last 3 weeks) to get the non-continuous nonitors to set so I could take it in to the emission test center here in Chicago. I stopped by the local Volvo dealer just to make sure I was following the complicated drive procedure correctly.

One of the techs did a courtesy readout of the OBD II and found the not ready conditions as expected. He checked everything else in the OBD II and reset the entire system. For kicks I went directly to the test center (3 mniles away at most) and the car passed the OBD II test!!!

I stopped back at the dealer and they were shocked. When we checked the monitors again we found none of the non-continuous monitors were set!

I am good until 2007, but this makes no sense. Perhaps Illinois has provided some unpublished exception for this car since it is known to have tough re-set issues.

I am not complaining, but it sure doesn't make sense to me. Any ideas?

Jim

Exact same thing happened to us this week.

Ready test were not completed, but went to test center in Lincolnshire, IL anyway.

    Car passed.

    It should not have passed.

I am guessing that Illinois must have relaxed the standards on some of the cars that are notorious for not setting the monitors. Several other states have provided alternative methods for some of the "trouble" vehicles.

The guys at the Volvo dealer were shocked too!

      Jim
