'99 Timing Belt interval V70-XC70 1999

Why would someone replace the timing belt at 60K? Isn't the service interval around 90K? I'm looking at a '99 XC to buy and the owner told me she had the timing belt replaced at 60K.

maybe they were talking about the serpentine belt, which is scheduled to get replaced at 60K. Maybe some idiot told her to replace it at 60K, difficult to say. I've never seen a belt fail before 105K, that out of thousands of 99- cars we serviced where I worked. I've only seen them in 960s when the belt wasn't done on time. I've seen them last 120K! But that was the customer's stupidity!

The real issue here is "what is the condition of your belt?" Look for cracks or other damage to the belt. Check several times as you can't see the whole belt at any one point in time. Age is another issue. Don't wait for 105k miles if that takes you 10 years. Rubber ages and weakens with time. The hot and cold seasonal changes, water, etc. will gradually age the rubber. I'd be more comfortable with 105k if that was at year 5 than 105k at year 10. My own philosophy is to start checking the belt at 50k and then to replace when 1)any noticable cracks, shreading or wear 2) 105k or 3)6 years old, whichever comes first.

At the end of the day, 105k alone is not reasonable if the rubber is old or has wear and different cars will drive different levels of wear based on how and where you use the car. This same holds true for your serpentine belt. Whenever you change the timing belt also change the serpentine belt. Costs just a few bucks and you've done all the work to get at it easily anyway so shouldn't be any more labor.

The timming belt interval is 105k on 99 and up.

Remember one thing, at 105,000 miles the severe engine damage if you have a belt failure is all yours, not the manufacturer as you are long out of warranty. So if you dont mind risking a major repair, wait and cross your fingers. Myself I would pay $400 at 70,000 and cover my bets.
