Jumpy Steering 850

My 1996 Volvo 850R's steering is great, but there seems to be way to much play when going over bumps and riding on the interstate. This isn't any kind of shimmy or vibration, but up and down movement; a sort of bouncing or jumping. I feel that this can't be right, so I'm asking you guys for advice on what needs checking or fixing. Thanks!

My 96 is developing a thunk/clunk over slow bumps, it doesn't seem to affect the steering or change when cornering. I have a pretty good inde. here in SO CAL, he says it is probably the upper strut bushing(s) in front. I looked at the sway bar end links they are good and tight, both ends. By the way I bought my R wagon last fall from the wifes' aunt, I love this car!

sounds like either the spring seat or strut mount. pop the hood, try bouncing the car and see if there's any play (and sound) on the strut mount. had my mounts replaced. the bearings went bad
