I had a P0410 for a while, but managed to fixed it.

The Pair system injects air into the exhaust system to super heat it and burn more emissions. It is only supposed to run when the car is cold and runs only for a few minutes. It is a sensless system that will not cause any harm to the car if it is not functioning, so don't lose any sleep over it. It is comprised of two components, and air pump and the pair valve. The system fails because the pair valve on 98's leak moisture down into the pump and corrode the pump.

To resolve your code try the following:

First: You do not need an ODBII reader to reset the code. Dissconect the negative battery lead for 20 minutes to reset the code. But, make sure that you have your radio code. Once the code is reset it may not occur again for some time. If the code reappreas in a few days, try the reset again before moving to the second step. If the code does not reappear, it was likely an anomoly and you do not need to worry about it.

Second: The air pump and valve will need to be replaced. If you replace just the pump, more condensation from the valve will leak into pump and destroy it again. So find a new valve and replace it. The pump can be bought from the dealer for $350USD or you can look for a used VW pump on ebay. Pierburg manufactures the pump for several companies and the VW one fits with some minor modifications.

Good luck.
Derek.

You are correct Peter, it has to do with the PAIR system. The first thing to consider is replacement of the PAIR valve, which is located above the exhaust manifold, to the left of the upper engine mount. It looks like the top of a vent stack chimney. www.fcpgroton.com sells the valve for about $86, and replacement is straightforward. After that you will need to get the code cleared. I recommend getting an ODBII code reader like an Auterra 3100, so you can diagnose and clear your codes.

check out www.volvospeed.com for instructions on how to replace the PAIR valve (A.K.A. SAS valve)

Are you certain of the P-code? P-codes in the 400 range seem to be all emissions related, but I cannot find a P0410 code. I'm not saying that it doesn't exist, kust that I fail to find a refernce to it anywhere. Of course, I am using 2000 xc reference, perhaps 1998 xc codes are different.
