A/C recharge kit, Cryseal, etc - 1998 S70

Hi,

I remember a while ago about a discussion regarding leaking evaps, recharge kits, sealants such as Cryseal, but could not find any of them. I tried searching the archives but couldn't find the posts anymore. I even remember reading a post with simple procedure of recharging the refrigerant.

Can anyone help me?

TIA

Those interested in reading about the Cryseal product(s), you can find it here:

Seems to work very well if you have a small leak, but not on a big one, but the stuff smells like rotten eggs. Read numerous posts on an Aussie board (especially from women) complaining that the smell wasn't worth it. I would think though that if the hole is sealed the smell would go away. Just my 2c worth.

I had no luck with sealants. Finally replaced the evap after a few years of recharging until the recharges didn't last.

Recharging is simple. If your car takes the can of R-134 then you can purchase that at any auto parts store like AutoZone, Discount Auto or a K-Mart. (note that Auto Zone may do the recharge for you free of charge, I know they've put oil in my car for me and done a couple of other little things when I bought the parts from them) When you buy the kit it comes with the small hose that connect to the nozzle toward the front left of the engine. Follow the directions. Start to fill it with the engine running and the A/C on full blast.
Some kits come with a guage..or you can buy that separately. We usually didn't use the guage. We'd use one or 2 cans with each recharge. You shouldn't over charge.

It's easy - just buy a can of coolant (get the "high mileage" kind which contains seal conditioners and extra coolant boosting stuff, seems to last a lot longer).

The valve to attach the hose to is on your left (if you stand in front of the car facing the windshield) just behind the headlight. It's about a foot down from the surface of the engine located on a pipe that leads from the A/C. This is on an 850 I've done it so I assume it's the same on the S70. Attach the hose to the valve, turn on the car and put the A/C to full blast, then open the can (usually a valve on it that controls the flow. Leave the car running about 30 min, then close the can and shut off the car.

Tina, thanks for the info. Just a few more questions:

1. Is there a specific pressure that you should reach before you stop?
2. Is the valve the one that says 6nm on the cover? If so, what did you use to make sure you don't tighten it too much?

Thanks again!

Yes that's the right valve,

And no I did not use the gauge - according to the gauge my system was over the pressure but it still took a can and then worked fine - I think the cheap gauges they include with the kits are useless! The can doesn't have enough pressure to over-charge your system it will simply stop going in when it is full. You can tell by feeling the outside of the can and shaking it around a bit if there is still some left in the can.

I don't know what you mean by tightning, I had a clip-on hose and the valve cover is only to keep dirt out - it's a pressure valve like on a basketball or tire...

good luck!

Thanks to you (and to Jot). I didn't realize it was that simple.

HAPPY EASTER!

There is a guage on the refill kit. Yes the valve is under the 6nm cap. The connection is a quick release no tightening.
