Hello,

I have a 1998 V70 XC Wagon. Recently a clicking sound has begun in the front right wheel area. This does not occur while engine idling, but when I drive. Both straight ahead and during turns. Any idea what this could be?

Could be the CV joint. Notice any grease on the inside of the rim? Turn the wheel all the way to the left, then look at the CV boot on the right. You should be able to see it. Split boots could be the problem. If so and one or more is CVs is clicking, its too far gone and has to be replaced or rebuilt. CVs on both sides of my 98 V70 have been rebuilt.

FYI I have 107,000 on the XC Volvo. I checked the right CV Boot, it does not look cracked, it has no grease leaking out and there is no grease around the inside wheel. Any other ideas, what could be causing this clicking?

be your front wheel bearing. Mine went at 100K on the right side and the car did not make a clicking sound but a noise that sounded like the right tire was scrubbing its side wall......driving straight ahead if you turned your steering wheel left and then right....on LEFT turns the noise got worse...on right turns the noise almost went away........replaced the right wheel bearing and court was adjourned....no more noise. Wheel bearings are known to go bad on the 70's series!!!

how many miles on your ride when you replaced the CV axle assembly?
