A/C problem - 1998 S70

Hello,

A/C compressor doesn't seem to be kicking in. Two years ago they put dye when they recharged the A/C and they found out that the evap was leaking. The A/C has been running nice and cool for the past 2 summers after the recharge. There is a very slow leak. Anyway, I was expecting the compressor to cycling every few seconds if it is due for a recharge but it never comes on even at the coldest setting. What gives?

TIA

If your Leak had leaked out...in other words no gas in the system at all, your drier may be saturated with water. If all worked after following the advice here, then no harm but if saturated, then you may need a new drier before you wil have success. Also check this out for leaks that aren't too big:

Sounds like your slow leak leaked every thing out. Unplug the pressure sensor on the low pressure line and short the end with the engine/AC running. The compressor should kick in. If it does, you are about two cans shy of full.

      A/C problem - 1998 S70

      Hi Klaus,

Sorry, I don't know a lot about the A/C system. Where is the pressure sensor and the low pressure line?

      Thanks again.

I just noticed that you have 2 1998's. You better learn about AC. The two lines on the pass side that go thru the fire wall, one has an electrical connection on it. About 6in from the firewall, just unclip it when the engine is running and the AC is on with the temp set to coldest. Take a spare piece of wire and conect the two ends of the pressure sensor. The AC clutch should start. Reconect the switch.
If the clutch works, add a can of r134a. Buy yourself a pressure gauge and all you need to do then is check the pressure once on a while. It should cycle between 43 and 23 psi. The connection is on the pass side, just infront of the computer box. The plastic cap is there to keep dirt out. Make sure it stays clean.
I have yet to see a Volvo keep AC pressure.
