I am trying to figure out the engine type in my car.
Can some one tell how to decipher the vin.

The engine number is on a white tag glued to the timing cover, you may have to move the coolant reservoir to see it well. its also stamped on the flat of the block just behind the timing cover on the exhaust side.

Need to know what model year to get you accurate vin codes.

nope, every thing you need is in the VIN. After all thats what a VIN is for.
go to sweedspeed or volvospeed for details.
