850 Engine Stuttering, Rough Idle 850

Last night I was driving my '97 850 GLT and everything was going smoothly except that the gas light was on. I started the odometer when the gas light came on and stayed on and it was at around 30 miles. As I was coming around a corner and into a gas station the engine started to get a bit jumpy and had a delayed response when accelerating. When I stopped the car it also had a rough idle speed. I disconnected the air mass meter and the check engine light is on. Can anyone help me? I don't know where to start.

If the car was very low on gas it might stumble on turns and inclines due to loss of pressure from the remaining gas sloshing away from the pickup line in the tank. In my 95-850 I've gone 40-50 miles in flat terrain at moderate speed with the fuel light on (not by choice) with no stumble, but this would depend on the particular car, the terrain, the speed, temperature, load, etc.

Did you disconnect the air flow meter first then refill the tank? When you refilled the tank did the car run ok again? If so then you probably had no reason to disconnect the airflow meter. Maybe nothing is wrong? Depending on the particular problem, the check engine would usually stay on unless reset by someone, even if everything is ok. If the engine does not now run properly it seems possible this problem is independent of running low on fuel. I'm not aware of a loss of fuel pressure triggering codes - does someone know different?

You ran out of gas when you rounded the corner. Now you need to get your codes reset and plug your AMM back in. You should never run your tank dry, think of all the codes that could be set if there was no gas being delivered to your engine!

I was just wondering, why did you reset your odometer and keep driving when the light came on? Did you not realize that you were running out of gas? I mean next to a house your car is the next largest investment you can make.
