questions about the 850 from a 940 guy 850

My 940 is on it's last leg, trans is going 196,000 miles my be time to put it out to sleep.

looking at a used 850 wagon, how is the Inline 5 turbo motor, and trans?
what is the difference between the GLT, T-5 and T-5R cars?
is the T-5R that much better? because it is rare are parts harder to get if something does go wrong?
what can be expected for a life span on the motor and trans under proper care?

thanks
Ed

Check the transmission fluid closely for any signs of burning. Front motor mounts (under crank pulley) go bad at 80-90K miles. Front strut bearings go bad. Listen for knocks when going over bumps. AC evaporators leak and are a major expensive repair. When going for a test drive be sure to take a few mile freeway speed run to get the transmission warmed up. This may show some developing problems. Be sure to try reverse and listen for any big clunks.

questions about the 850 from a 940 guy 850

Hi Ed,
GLT is also know as the "soft turbo".
850 T5 has a great motor but the tranny is less than bullet proof.
T5R is a very good car, (I'm not sure how much more hp it has over the T5) but I do believe it has the same tranny.
Avoid anything year 1993 (First year production, know for problems and parts are rare/expensive).
I've heard of the T5 going 200,000 mi or better without problems.
Be sure the car you buy has had the serpentine belt replaced recently, if not make it the first thing you do.

The GLT is only a turbo in 1997 and up. It used the low pressure turbo system, which is the best of the lot for drivability , IMHO.

If I recall correctly, previous GLT models were normally aspirated, it was a trim designation.

True - 95 GLT is not a turbo.

Nor is the '96 GLT a turbo.
