850 dash switches 850

Greetings,

My 94 850 has just lost the last of the LED lights in dashboard rocker switches. Since they range from 30 to 50 dollars each, I was wondering if anyone has dissassembled and replaced the LED in the switch. If so, where did you source them and what is the correct wattage?

Thanks in advance

Geoff

If you want another way to go find a salvage yard that you can get the older more square style like you have. Or get the newer more rounded switches that have the replacable light.

Either way about $15 a switch from http://www.erievovo.com/index.html if you want a place I got replacements from. Also ebay is a souce. The plugs on the back are all the same.

    Hi Geoff,

If you are talking about switches such as sunroof, etc. then the solution is fairly easy. You do not need to buy the entire switch. Just pry the switch out (If I remember correctly I actually dropped the kick panel on the driver side to gain access to those switches from behind and push them out) On the side of each switch you will see a small plastic circle with an indentation for a screwdriver, this is actually the butt end of the bulb, screw the bulb out (takes 1/4 turn). I happened to have similar switches from an old Mazda RX6 laying around in my garage and turned out that the bulbs were still good in those, moreover they were interchangable with ones on my 850. This makes me think that you should be able to buy these bulbs at any parts store.

i also replaced the switch bulbs with the mini bulbs from radio shack and have had no problems, its been close to five years now. the RS bulbs are slightly brighter than the original bulbs but at less than $2 alot more cost efficient..

Geoff, are you sure they are LED's. My 94 850 had 12volt lamps and I replaced several using a #7219 Micro Lamp from Radio Shack (p/n 272-1092C). Some are a little tricky to remove without damaging the switch, but if you're careful you can replace them easily and for about a buck apiece.

Tanker, I recently had one apart, and the light source was soldered on and appeared to be an LED. I am no expert , so I guess a trip to Radio shack would be in order. Thanks for the info!

    Try IPD:

    http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=459&NodeID=368&RootID=629

    Probably Part # : WS9148908 or Part # : WS9148906

Prices seem high, but worth the convenience?

I did this on my 97 850, very easy job.

FYI - early 850 switches are hard wired bulbs - the IPD link is for the newer and rounder switch.

Hi Geoff, For LEDs you can check www.digikey.com they will have hundreds of them. If you are lucky you will be able to get a part number off of the LED that you remove, if not, they are all pretty much the same if the package is the same, they make more light if you put more current in them. Since the current is controlled by a resistor that you won't be replacing, that won't be a problem. Be aware that LEDs must be put in in the proper orientation, if it is in backward, it won't work (no damage though).

Good Luck (thanks for the washer help)

    Geoff
