Wife got stranded because our 98 XC would not allow the key to be removed from the ignition or turned to the start position after shutting down. Steering wheel was jiggled in a failed attempt as was cycling/depression of the override button. Had the vehicle towed to the dealer that removed the console and cleaned the override button for $50. Got the car home and the same thing happened again although this time the key would rotate 360 degrees if it wasn't restricted in the start or removal position. What is my problem?

You need a new steering column/ignition lock, and possibly a gearshift knob. Ignition lock failure is common on 98 and newer models, and also the gearshift knob. The release button cracks at the pivot point and the button binds, which prevents fully engaging park, which prevents the "key lock" cable from fully releasing, which prevents the key from being removed.
