HELP! Tranny won't shift into 2nd 850 1995

When cold (20-30 degrees) my AT '95 850 turbo won't shift out of 1st gear until I've driven about 1 or 2 tenths of a mile. I have flushed the tranny fluid to synthetic about 47K ago. Have any advice?

    HELP! Tranny won't shift into 2nd 850 1995

Is this a new symptom? My 95-850 upshifts slow from first when it is very cold outside. It happens the first 2 or 3 times I take off from a stop, then it is ok. The car did this when I got it at 30K miles, it did it after I changed the PNP, and it still does it. I have 120K and changed the fluid at 60K and 110K. I had the check engine when the PNP needed changing (at about 90K) and the trans sometimes went into safe mode at that time. This did not happen again after changing the PNP.

Because your car has a "chip", what does your tranny fluid look like? It's almost time to flush it again after 47K of hard starts.

The tranny fluid is still translucent but darker then new. I'm thinking I will put the PNP switch is on a warm day this spring.

Before you replace anything, go to the Bay 13 section of Volvospeed.com and check out the transmission section. There is description on replacing the PNP, but it also describes "ratcheting" the shift lever to clean the contacts on the PNP switch. That may resolve your problem at no cost.

    Good Luck!

sounds like your pnp switch. have it changed. you might also want your microswitch replaced while you're at it.

    Michael,

As I'm sure other's will tell you, it is most likely the PNP switch on the transmission. This is a common failure, but isn't a major problem and is relatively easy to replace. I replaced this switch on the wife's 1995 850 Turbo a year or two ago. Her car had the same symptom, no upshift in the morning (as you have), but also had no reverse lamps, and occasionally, no start (due to the switch not showing that the shifter is in park). I would suggest this: move the shifter into the "3" position and see if it upshifts. Usually it will, and you can then shift it back into drive.

Let me know what you find...

Can you tell me what is involved in replacing the PNP switch? Time to do job and where switch is located?

I have noticed that my reverse lights are intermitent. I ave also notice that there have been maybe 3 times when the car wouldn't start. I got out locked and unlocked the car and the all was OK.

While driveing If I downshift into 3rd or 2, the car would get a CEL and go into limp mode. I would stop clear the CEL and all was OK as long as I didn't down shift.

Is all this pointing toward the PNP switch?

      -Michael S.

        Go to Volvospeed 850 1995

        Look here:

Not as hard as it looks.
