New '94 850 Turbo owner, got a few questions! no owners manual 850 1994

Hey all,

I just bought a 1994 850 Turbo, Im in Victoria BC Canada. The car is in extremely good condition, with all service records since its original purchase, and has had only one owner. The last service was at 142,400KM and that was its 144,000 Check (according to the maitainance booklet). The date for that check was December 2003. I bought the car yesterday (March 9, 2005) and it has 143,800KM. So it has only had 1,400KM in the last year or so.

My Question(s) / Observations are:

The car idle's fine, but at speeds above 50km, or RPM's about 3,000 There is some hesitation (slight) followed by surging (more prominent) at intervals of about 2-3 seconds. The is more noticeable with more boost (or more throttle) and on accelerations. It also seems to be sluggish off the line.

The Lambda light was on, so I checked the engine codes, receiving 4-3-6 (Rear o2 Sensor Max. Compensation) and 2-4-1 (EGR Low Flow Fault).

I recently cleared that, but havnt driven since, my guess is it will come back. The salesman suggested that the engine had been cleaned, and some electrical had gotten wet, I checked as best as I could but it all seemed fine.
I havnt checked in depth for vacuum leaks, but everything looks pretty new, some elbows are quite soft though.

Also, since my car is 1994, from what I've read it seems im between OBD I and OBD II. In the dash it says "OBD II" and in the engine it says "OBD I Certified" Which is it?

Thanks in advance,

- Graham McMicken
Proud new owner!

For the EGR low flow, follow the instructions here

    http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/egr.htm

I did mine myself last year with minimal tools, I just removed throttle body and used a screw to bore out the hole between throttle body and EGR (didn't remove the entire EGR) and then clean throttle body with carb cleaner.

I had to do this because there was a code in the computer and the car failed smog (didn't know because the engine check light was burned out). So after about 2 hours of cleaning/boring out the hole, put it back together, cleared the codes and the car ran better and passed it's smog test. Yay!

You may also find this useful, you can easily check codes with no tools:

Most used car dealers have some type of 30 day warranty unless you bought it as is. I would try complaining about it first. Its worth a try.

The salesman lied. Cleaning the engine did not hurt it, it helped you. You have a vacuum leak. Check the vacuum elbo just to the left of the intake manifold as you look at the engine, and under the battery too. You have an OBDII computer. The codes may not come back, especially the O2 sensor. It should drive better when the codes are cleared. The throttle body is probably as dirty as the Berea tar pits, and check the manifold pressure line that goes back to the turbo inlet (next to the firewall, about 1 foot down).
Check the tranny fluid for redish colour (if it is brown, flush it down) - IPD sells a tranny filter for less than $25.

      Thanks for your quick reply!

Thats good news about the engine cleaning. So it definatly sounds like a vacuum leak eh? I just came back from driving to the corner store, and the Lambda light came on again, havnt checked the code yet though.

I'll definatly check the vacuum hoses where you mentioned, apart from broken/unattached lines, what else should I be looking for? I read somewhere about elbows being too soft. Im not sure how to clean the throttle body... I can search the forums or something I guess, cause I really dont have enough money to take it to the dealer and its not due for awile. If you have any instructions, that would also be really helpful!

Also, What am I supposed to be checking with the manifold pressure line? I really have no clue there either. I plan on flushing the engine and tranny anyway. Any oil recommendations? I've been wanting to try a synthetic for a while now, but I dont know if its good or not.

      Thanks again

      -Graham
