door trim fell off on an 850 turbo

Hi everyone. I have a 1994 Volvo 850 turbo wagon with 143k miles on it which I've had for many years. I've been having problems with the gray door trim that's located on the lower third of the doors on the passenger side. Some how the very front of the trim on the front passenger side door got caught in the front fender and that caused the rear door trim piece to also get out of alignment. So when one of the doors was opened, the trim would go outside the car instead of going with the door as it traveled inside as the door opened. The trim caught and bowed outwards.

Today the trim finally fell right off the car. I'd rather not spend the money to get it fixed. However, I noticed there are holes in the door where the trim attachments go. I don't know what will happen if water gets in there.

Do you think it'll harm the car by leaving the trim off? In other words, would you recommend getting the trim fixed for a functional (vs. cosmetic) reason. I don't want to try to save $150-200 and then cause $300 or more of damage to the door.

Thanks,
-Daniel W Fisher

door trim fell off on an 850 turbo

    Dan,
My 854Turbo did the same thing. The right front fender was pushed slightly in a parking lot. This caused the rear of the fender to go "in" just 1cm infront of the front door. The trim on the front door then wouldn't clear the gap and overlapped on to the fender, causing the trim to push backwards and effecting the back door. Eventually, all 3 peices came loose! Good thing the side panels had a screw holding in the rear most plug.
A fellow brick boarder parted his 950 out recently, so I have both door panels from my car still available. I don't know if they fit your car. Email me.
In the meantime, use clear packing tape to cover the holes!

    Hi Dan,
I'm assuming that you lost the trim in transit?
If so, and if you really don't care about appearances you can fill the holes with a tube of black or transparent silicone. The doors have "drip holes" in the bottoms, but you may be asking for a rust or window motor problem if you let moisture get in thru the trim anchor holes, so yes, either replace the trim or plug the holes. If you do still have the trim then you can get a tube of adhesive and re-affix the trim by applying a bead of this to the back of the trim and use masking tape to hold the trim in the proper location until the adhesive dries (@ 24 hours). Any auto/body shop sells this adhesive fro @ 12 bucks a tube.
