Radio antenna 850 1994

My radio antenna does not go up and down but I hear noise like a motor operating. Could this be just loose connections and is this an easy job to perform. Thanks

    Hi,

You can definitely do this yourself. I just fixed my mast recently, unfortunately for me the mast snapped off inside the motor, so I had to take the motor out of the trunk, take it apart, and then put it back together..then install the new mast (that was a bit of pain, but it works fine now). I also bought a power antenna switch from Borton Volvo and installed that myself (easy, plugs right into the factory radio harness..now I can keep the antenna down when I don't need it..which is most of the time since I am using an iPod for most of my music. The instructions that come with the new antenna mast are easy to follow.

That's one thing I miss from the 740 - the antenna switch. I checked out the Borton site - 26.95 for the switch, PLUS 29.95 if you want it in black for the 850? What color is standard in the S70, and can it be painted or stained black?

UPDATE - Volvospeed has a picture of the OEM S70 switch in an 850 - the S70 is a lighter shade.

One of the board guys put an S70 switch in his 850 and used a magic marker to turn it black (except for the "Y" area.) Looked pretty good.

I added an antenna switch to my 1995 850 with a $2 SPST switch I had laying around. If you have the wiring diagram for the radio wiring harness, you'll find the power wire for the antenna motor. IIRC, it's bright blue - easy to find. I soldered two long wires to the switch before starting. Then I popped out one of the empty switch panels to the right of the steering wheel, mounted the switch (using hot glue to secure it after I screwed the retaining bezel to it) and fished the wires behind the radio. Then a quick snip and strip of the antenna power wire, soldered it to my leads and a little heat shrink tubing made a nice, neat installation for a total of 10 minutes time. Worked like a charm. If you're handy with a soldering iron, I'd recommend doing this yourself. Otherwise, find someone who is and buy 'em a six pack of beer.

I'm kinda picky about the appearance of the dash - I could certainly wire up a switch and I probably have one around, but looks count in this one, for the moment. Thanks, though.

I own a '96 850 Turbo and added an antenna down switch sometime ago. It was very easy to install. I ordered a switch from a 940 model that is black and it matches all of my other switches perfectly.
I would be happy to look up the part number that I ordered if this would be of assistance to you. Good luck, Fred.

Does the 940 switch really look like the 850 trim style? The 850 is quite different than the 740. The 740 was a rectangular rocker with the Y symbol on a flat above the switch. (There were also two styles - one with sharp edges and one with "softer" edges). The 850 is much more "sculpted."

(I just remembered that I sold an antenna switch on ebay a couple of years ago, that I picked up for $10 at the parts yard. If I had only known ... but it was from a 240 or early 740, and the wiring was almost certainly different.)

        Hi,

I requested the switch online from Borton to get the discount and then I went to Borton's dealership in Minneapolis to pick it up. The standard switch is gray..which is the one I got..I don't see any reason why you couldn't paint it..I didn't bother for now. The switch should work with any 850 (1994 and later with the stock wiring harness. The switch I purchased is exactly the one shown in the Volvospeed link above.

It's actually easier then the previous post suggests. Just have someone turn the radio on, while you at the same time grab the top of the antenna (you may have to use single nose pliers to grab the top) and just pull it right out. After purchasing the new replacment mast, (which is inexpensive) follow the instructions for installation. Basically you have someone turn the radio off, while at the same time, you feed the new threaded "tail" into the hole. If you are lucky, the motor will "grab" the thread at first attempt. If not, keep trying the routine until the motor grabs it. I replaced mine years ago and it grabbed the first time and took a total of 10 minutes to replace. Good Luck!

THe simple solution is not really correct. You have to get the broken pieces out of the motor and gear assembly. That means removing the antenna. Simple. One nut holds the "motor" cover on. Remove broken pieces. Put it back together and reinstall. I have bought several masts from e-bay cheap.

With a helper in the car, insert mast as far as it will go. Have helper turn on radio then back off. Mast should go into the assembly. When it stops, repeat procedure. On for a second or two, then off.

One more thing you should check--the black mount with the hole thru which your antenna passes has an o-ring in its base. My antenna was not going up and down, so I bought a new one to replace it. However, when I took off the mount, I tried the antenna and it worked, then I noticed the o-ring. All of the 'up and down' of the antenna eventually works crud into the o-ring and drastically increases the friction. So, the antenna stops and/or the plastic tail breaks. Before you order a new antenna, try running the antenna with the mount removed. If it runs, replace the o-ring and you are done. If not, replace the antenna and the o-ring. And in the future, replacing that o-ring now and then should keep your antenna working indefinitely.

The little plastic wand that attaches to the metal mast is broken inside of the motor. No big deal just take the necesary panels out of the trunk to get to the motor assembly, remove the motor, take the cover off of the side of it, remove the broken plastic piece, put it back together and re-install it, stuff the plastic piece from the new mast all the way down the antenna and feed it into the motor, turn the radio off and it should retract it. I have no doubt there is a super cool tutorial on the web somewhere that will show you exactly how to do it. Rest assured it is a very easy job and the mast should only set you back $20.00-$30.00 +S&H.
