I had a similar problem went to a dealer and purchased a reman radio/cd player put it in and same problem come to find out that sometimes the antenna wasnt going up all the time replaced antenna mast problem solved make sure the antenna mast goes up all the way

Could just be the antenna wire - mine has an intermittent connection right where it plugs into the radio. If I pull the radio out and wiggle the connection it comes back on, but it won't stay on. My next step is to try a new antenna wire.

For some reason the AM works as yours does - it may use the shielding on the coaxial wire as its antenna.

Radio is tits up. Go get a new one. I traded my crappy SC811 for a reman'd SC816 at the dealer for $200. The SC816 has a CD player in it.
