Removing interior tailgate trim panel V70-XC70 1998

Greetings--

My '98 V70's rear hatch interior trim panel has fallen off. I purchased IPD's repair kit, but I'm having a world of trouble getting the panel off the car to install the kit.

Step one in IPD's instructions says...

"Remove the inside hatch handle trim by prying along the top of the trim between the carpet and the plastic trim. Do not pry from the bottom of the trim, as there are lock tabs along the bottom. The top of the trim is where it clips. It will be tight, so use a strong putty knife or scraper"

They are not kidding. I've been prying on that thing with all manner of tools for about an hour, and there is no way that trim piece is going to come off without breaking it. Are the instructions wrong for my particular model, or am I an idiot? I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give some detailed, accurate instructions for removing this trim panel without destroying it.

Thanks,

Phil "I Hate Trim" Mastman

I have not started yet, but please tell me of your outcome---mine is the same and driving me NUTS. I now have discrete screws in the bottom but cannot figure out any way to fasten the top of the tailgate panel. Are there other ideas besidea these infernal clips that break ?

I cheated... I had the dealer remove the panel for me. They got it off without breaking anything. I installed IPD's repair kit, which took about 20 minutes, and now the panel is remounted solidly.

Once the panel was removed, I was able to easily see the problem. The top of the panel has four mounting pylons for the mounting clips. 3 out of the four pylons had broken-out holes where the clips are supposed to attach. One of the entire pylons had cracked. IPD's kit includes small sheet metal pieces that you screw onto the top of the pylons, giving the mounting clips something secure to hold onto. These will only work if the pylon itself is not broken or damaged.

Because the added sheetmetal pieces sit on top of the pylons, there is thickness added to the pylon. That means that when you remount the panel, there is a small gap, maybe 1/16" between the panel and the tailgate glass that was never there in the original installation. If you can live with this, and your pylons haven't completely broken, the $20 IPD kit is a great alternative to spending $150 plus for an entirely new tailgate panel.

      Den--

IPD sells a kit for about 20 bucks that adds a more robust mounting surface to the interior trim panel. Now if I could only get the stupid thing off without breaking something, I could install it!

    Phil,
I recently had to do the same thing and unfortunately pried off the wrong end and broke the trim in half. Make sure that you pry from the window or top of the latch trim piece and it is tight! If you manage to break the trim piece like I did, super glue works well.:)

I have been prying from the top, per the instructions. I guess I'd better have some super glue on hand!

I've done the repair to both of my V70 T5's.

I ended up breaking the trim piece. It's under $10 for a new one.
