Performance Upgrades for 1998 S70 Non-Turbo (NA) S70

I just bought a 1998 S70 non-turbo (NA) Volvo and am looking for suggestions on how to upgrade or modify the performance. Its not a particularly slow ride... but it seems pretty G-rated. I have read that the output is around 168hp from the 5-cylinder inline. I have also read that there are a number of performance modification options for the turbo models. I have not seen much for the NA models.

What options are there for the NA S70's that do not include buying a turbo model?

You would be surprised how much time is spent at gas stations filling up turbos. In a long distance race, you would win. 0 - 60 isn't everything. Yeah, I have two turbos, and it is fun to kick it once in a while. I also used to have a VW convertible with 40 hp that would go 70mph, down hill and with the wind. Had more fun with that car!

This message thread is likely to be a very short one, because you've ruled out the most cost-effective option. I really don't mean to sound condescending, but there's not much you can do for that engine.

On the other hand, there are still braking and handling upgrades that can be done which might make the car a more enjoyable driver. And, if you're willing to forego some (most) comfort and convenience items, you can start pulling things out of the car to make it lighter. "Adding lightness" is one of the first things that a race car designer will do, and that's a concept that is often lacking when a street racer starts modifying his/her car.

there is an outfit that sells a new CPU chip for ~600 bucks, but why pay that for an increase of under 20HP or so?

Agree, and the N/A engine is not properly "sleeved", so cannot handle the stress of additional HP. You would be stressing the weakest link by trying to squeeze more out of that engine.

The older redblock Volvos were easily retrofitted with a bolt on turbo, but the aluminum blocks on the newer generation are a much different animal.

Trade up to to a T5 or R if you want more performance.
