Decaying wire looms V70-XC70 2001

A word of advice to those Volvo owners whose vehicles are approaching the end of their warrenties. Make sure you examine as many of the plastic wire looms that sheath the wire harnesses under the hood as you can. Changing the spark plugs at 30k, I noticed that the looms covering the spark plug wires were crumbling to dust (you need to remove a few torx screws to get the black cover off). The dealer replaced these for me at no cost.

Now at near 60k miles, I'm seeing a number of other looms crumbling away on their own. In particular, right on top of the power steering pump, there's a plug assembly that goes to the thermostat temperature sensor. Follow the wire down under the radiator hose and give the loom a slight squeeze. If it disintegrates, join the club.

You think that Volvo would have had enough of the bad reputation their biodegradable wiring harnesses earned them on the 1980's 240...

    Decaying wire looms V70-XC70 1998

So new Volvos have wire loom on the spark plug wires now, huh? When I changed my knock sensors recently, one of the things you have to do is remove the fuel injector rail. The injector wire harness is covered with plastic wire loom, which also was crumbling. I temp fixed it with some black electrical tape, but later found some replacement loom at a local electronics store for about .50 a foot. I purchased about 3 feet and replaced the wire harness loom. No problem...

This issue comes up often on various S60, V70 and S80 forums, particularly relative to the spark plug loom under the engine cover. Someone posted an official Volvo Technical Service Bulletin that advises Dealers to wrap the wires with electrical tape rather than replacing the plastic sheath, which will just disintegrate again like the original.
