2.4L Low CYL Compression 850

Just found 2 cylinders at 40 psi compression on my 1995 850GLT. I added oil and they came up quite a bit. Must be either bad rings and or cylinder walls. This car is average with 170k miles on it, worth about $5000 with a good engine. Do I do a engine job with the block in the car, or pull eng and work it over, or is there a way to come up with another used engine???

Are the 2 low compression cylinders located side-by-side?
It might be just a leaky head-gasket between the 2 cylinders...

I'll bet ya is the head-gasket! it happened to my own brother a month ago with his S70. The 2 low compression cylinders were located side-by-side and BOTH exactly at 38 psi !!

If you have the ability, why not just hone the cylinders and replace the rings? You should be able to do that with the engine in...might be a bit awkward. If you pull it, rebuild it fully if you want to keep it. If you want to sell it, just get an engine from a junkyard and put it in.

How long have you had the car? Did you check it when you bought it?

    How does it run?

    Why not just drive it?

I have seen cars pick up compression when they are well cared for.

I have had car for 5 years and I have driven it 100k miles.. I have never done a compresion check on this engine before..

It is low on power and is dropping.. The oil consuption is increasing over time...

It has 5 years of good maint and easy or normal driving...

I dont think it will cure it self if it is cyl wall damage... I will borescope the cylinders to look at cyl walls..
If the are smooth maybe it is just stuck rings??? If so maybe i can break them loose some how Engine cleaner??

This is a non turbo engine...

      Thanks

Looks like you have a pretty good grasp of the situation. Your second post helps me understand your problem much more.

Perhaps you should post a summary of both these posts at Volvospeed? There seems to be a lot more FWD action there.
