Odometer/ Instrument Cluster Repair Tips 850 1995

I just finished replacing the odometer gear and a bad bulb on my '95 850. I bought the gear w/ the DVD from IPD and the DVD was very good. A couple of tips that would have helped- the odometer is screwed to the cluster with Torx 8 screws. After trying several stores and every little screwdriver I have I finally used needle nose pliers and then ground off some edges on a very small flat-blade screwdriver to get these screws out. The second tip is to try and nestle your dash back into place when you aren't working. I left mine flexed up for too long and have some deformity. I'll probably try a hair dryer/heat gun to mold it back. Also put a rag over the dash brackets that will scratch the cluster face to protect it, it is a very tight fit!

Is there an electronic odometer that will read the correct mileage? I don't plan to sell the car anytime soon, but it will be ~1000 miles off and I don't want to learn the hard way or be accused of anything.

To Determine the mileage on a Volvo 850 if the odometer doesn’t work….

The answer depends on year. For '93-'95 models with the diagnostic ports under the hood near the ECU box, the answer is yes. Follow this procedure:

1. Switch ignition on

2. Connect the fly wire to socket - A7

3. Push button 5 times

4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles

5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

This is how to determine the true mileage on the Volvos with the underhood DTC boxes. I have not seen the '96 and newer ones able to do this through the OBDII port.

Odometer/ Instrument Cluster Repair Tips 850 1995

Mike,
Thank you, I'm sorry I didn't read the full thread last week. Than was very helpful. I just received my DVD from IPD, and for a shady tree mechanic like myself I think it will work out fine. Very clearly done. I'll watch out for those small screws too. I'm use to working on my 240's, 850's are a different beast.
One last question, I don't have a meter to read the box, any heads up on what a shop would charge to tell me the same?
Thanks again.
D.

Charlie,

There is a socket under the hood that the dealer can hook up to and get the electronic mileage of the car. Take it to your local Volvo shop and they should be able to confirm the true milage on the car.

Odometer/ Instrument Cluster Repair Tips 850 1995

Hi, I'm in the same boat and want to be on the level.
Mines a 95, 850, I ordered the gear and DVD yesterday, so I'm on the same track to get repaired. Once I get the actual electronic mileage via the dealer/repair shop and I put the new gear in, will I be able to update the odemeter to the correct mileage?
Thanks in advance.
