hi,

recently a friend of mine was involved in an accident whilst driving his 1998 V70. the car was repaired, but there remains a persistant problem with the SRS light. it has been back to the dealer on several occasions, each time accruing a rather large bill. each time, within a few weeks, the light returns.

finally, it seems to have gone for good. they claim that the cause of the problem was

I take it there is a separate airbag timer or something such as this?

are they just yanking his chain?

having worked in car service for some years i don't remember 'clock springs' failing because of 'accidents' relating to airbag systems. i'd be interested to know what all was replaced concerning the accident...the srs module/computer tends to be the culprit...not that the spring can't go bad but when they do its usually all or nothing.

Some folks refer to the "contact reel" which carries the current from the steering column to the airbag as a "clock spring", because internally it resembles the mainspring from a mechanical clock. If this "spring" fails, or is improperly installed in can set an SRS light.

thanks for that. the airbags did not deploy as a result of the accident. could the reel have been damaged?
