brakes misbehaving 850 1996

Yesterday the road conditions were pretty bad, rain which froze and snow covering the ice. On my drive home 3 of 8 times I braked, the brake pedal depressed further than usual and my car failed to slow down and I narrowly escaped an accident. I could also feel every bump in the road through the brake pedal. Could this issue be due to the road conditions or is it something more serious like the master cylinder that I need to get checked out? Thanks.

That's your ABS engaging. Mine "feels" the same way on ice. Unlike American cars which have the ABS kick the brake pedal up and down, scaring the driver to death, Volvo lets the pedal go down an extra 1/2 inch and keeps the pressure steady. Slow down. I tell my daughter that if the ABS engages, she made a driving mistake and the car has saved her - lucky she has a good car.

Is the brake pedal going to the floor ? If it is then yes you need to at least power bleed the brakes and if that doesn't firm up the pedal you will need to replace the master cylinder. Has the brake fluid ever been flushed? It deteriorates over time and should be flushed every two years.
