Rear seat belt hangs up and keeps rear seat from raising 850 1997

Is there a simple fix for this problem besides leaving the center belt unfastened from the floor? When I lower the back seat the center seat belt extends, but two times out of three it won't release when it comes time to pull the seat upright. Each time I've had to take the seat belt loose from the floor. This is becoming a real irritant. Volvo parts or service was no help. If I replace the whole center seat belt assembly with one out of a wrecked 98 V-70, would this cure the problem? Am at a loss of what else to do. Dick

bob is right. The webbing actually has several plastic buttons (or at least it SHOULD have the buttons). Mine broke off because I was using the back seats with kids car seats. I never noticed the little buttons were until my seat got stuck in the lowered position. Like you I removed the lower bolt holding the seatbelt in order to fix the problem.

Get the buttons from the dealer. They will know what you are talking about. In my case, I usually just use a child's carseat locking clip to hold the seatbelt and keep it from retracting too far into the top of the seat. This keeps it from locking up when I fold the seat down.

Good luck

Have a look at all 3 belts. There should be a plastic button in the webbing of all belts to prevent the belt from retracting too far into the seat when folding. My guess is one of yours is missing. They are available at the dealer for a few dollars, and easy to install. Simply find the original hole, put a drop of superglue on the button and squeeze both halves together on the belt with pliers. Then heat a small punch with a propane torch and mushroom the protruding tab on the button. You will see what I mean when you get the button. And don't let them tell you you gotta buy the whole belt to get the button!

Common problem in the 850/70 wagons, especially the passenger side rear seat belt.

Getting a replacement won't help much. Mine was replaced under warranty last year, and had been replaced 2 years prior to this time.

The solution, I've read, is prevention. Next time you need to fold the rear seats, pull a bout a foot of seat belt before you fold that seat. Get into that habit, and you'll save some money and headaches.
