Control Arm Shields- Needed? V70-XC70 1999

I noticed that I was missing a control arm shield ( triangular plastic shield that inserts into the bottom of the A-shaped arm) during my oil change. I serves a purpose, however where can I get a replacement other than at the dealer? Appreciate your response.

All this talk about new control arms. Maybe they are bad...maybe not, BUT your question was do you need the sheilds. No, you really don't. They frequently get knocked off and the car is fine. Check a wrecking yard for the the shield if it bothers you. The flimey things just push on.

Depending on driving habits, conditions in your area, and mileage on the car, you are probably due for replacement of the arms. I doubt this is a seperate part, but give the dealer a call, as you may be suprised.

How do you know when to replace the control arms? Is it just based on mileage?

      thanks

Play in the ball joint will be a sign the arm needs replacing. You cannot just replace the ball joint on these, so the entire are must be done. Not bad for a DIY'er. Depending on road conditions and driving habits, start keeping an eye on them at 60K miles.

          Control Arom replacement V70-XC70 1998

About the only difficulty involves position tightening the control arm mounting bolts after tightening them to the initial torque value. As per the Haynes manual, weight has to be on the wheels when doing it. I tried driving the car on ramps, but had no room to work. I did it by supporting the car on jackstands under the control arms and then doing the position tightening with a 1/4" drive breaker bar and socket Worked for me.
