S70 uses some oil S70

I've got a 2000 S70 GLT ( low pressure turbo) and it uses about 1-2 quarts of oil between 3000 mile oil changes. I never seen any leaking onto the driveway when I park it. I also never notice any smoke from the exhaust that would indicate that it is buring oil. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Who changes your oil? Do you check the level a day or two after the oil change. Some techs never do anything more than add the amount of oil that the specs call for, and your brick might be starting out a bit low.

While not great, one quart in 3000 miles is not out of the question.

Of our 3 turbos and 4 NA bricks, all the turbos have used more oil than the NA cars.

I usually change the oil in it. If I remember right it takes a little over 6 quarts for a change. After looking at the car today, I see some oil leaking out from the bottom hose that connects to the intercooler. Guess this means that it is the turbo seals. Yeah, a quart every 3000 miles really isn't that bad. Definately not enough to replace the turbo over. I would like to get the cat replaced so that the check engine light wouldn't stay on all of the time.

Thanks for the response.

Dave

How many miles on the car ? It could be your Turbo seals are gone and leaking oil into the exhaust stream, this type of oil burning is very hard to notice as you normally do not get a large puff of blue smoke.

It's got 120 K miles on it. We bought the car in 2000 and have kept the oil changed ( non synthetic). I want to switch it over to synthetic (say M1 5W30). I just hate to think that a car this new would need the turbo redone. My '84 760 Turbo is on it's original turbo at 160K. We've also had it since new. The '84 does use about a quart of oil between changes, but I'm impressed that a non watercooled turbo has held up this long. As for the S70, how could I check to verify that the problem is the turbo? Another problem: the check engine light stays on all of the time. Dealer says that the cat is bad and wants $1200 to replace it. Do you think that the car could have bad turbo seals, which is letting oil get into the cat, causing it to go bad?

Thanks for the info.
Dave

two things dave,it might be turbo but i doubt it,i have fixed many 850 and s-70 oil burning problems by replacing oil trap housing under intake, they get stopped up and wont let crankcase ventilate properly,it will push oil through past of least resistance. in your case, turbo that will also effect cat.have codes cleared and lock car in lower gear and drive it at fairly high rpm for about 2 to 3 miles, that will clean cat.conveter out.good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'll order an oil trap for it and see what happens. Can I clear the codes by unhooking the ground from the battery and letting the car sit for a while?

yes you can clear codes, touch neg and positive wires togethter AFTER YOU UNHOOK BATTERY! this will get rid of any residual juice left in comp and so on. remember oil trap housing is under intake on that car so you,ll need intake gasket.good luck.

Oil being fed to the cat will ruin it...... Did you buy the car used ? If the oil was not changed often by the PO or he/she did not cool down Turbo prior to shut down or used cheap dino oil, the Turbo seals and bearings will suffer. I personally know of no way to check for worn Turbo seals except by eliminating all other possible causes of excessive oil consumption (leaks, bad rings, etc), maybe some other Brickboarder knows of a way to verify worn seals without Turbo tear-down.

You can check for play in the shaft of the turbo by removing air intake hose and tryign to move turbo shaft, it should hardly move at all.
