oil leak from rear main seal area 850 1993

My '93 850 GLT (non-turbo) has 155K miles. I have oil leaking from the rear main seal area. My swedish mechanic suggested that we try working in the intake manifold area taking care all the things that could cause the crankcase not to breathe properly. He did this, but it is still leaking about as much. The car is otherwise in good shape. Should I endure the huge expense of a rear main seal replacement or does anyone have a better and hopefully cheaper solution. Thanks!!

Hi, i have the same problem for about two weeks, my car it's a 850 93' alsohas only 90.000 miles.

I foung this post about our problem:

The shop I went to specializes in Volvo and they said that the oil breather in the air cleaner housing should be cleaned with every oil change. If this breather clogs, it can cause pressure to build up in your engine and cause an oil seal (crankshaft or camshaft, for example)to begin leaking.

Let me know if you fix the problem.

Good Luck,

If this is the first RMS replacement for the car, you've done very well, especially for a 93. The compound used in the early RMS was not particularly stout, and this is a common issue, even on cars with a functioning PCV system. Over time, the seal just fails. On or about 96-97 they replaced the seal with a better material, so if you do decide to do the seal, you will get the better design, and it will probably never happen again, especially since your pcv is in great condition now.

There is no genie in a bottle when it comes to this repair. Seal "fixers" will create more problems in the long run than they might "temporarily" fix.

Your indy should be able to do the repair for $700, especially since you just spend good money on getting the pcv in good working order.
