My sister has a 95 850 and the check engine light recently came on. The dealer told her it was a transmission sensor fault. If the sensor is replaced will this fix the problem? Is the tranny beginning to fail?
The car has 130,000 miles on it and my sister would like to know if we will have to replace the tranny in the near future. If so, I'll start looking for a used one to put in. Are there newer years for the 850 that have the same or better tranny?

Go to the FAQ on this site for 700/900 to learn how to read the codes. A list of the codes is avalible at WWW.volvospeed.com maintenance codes. You can be the second opinion. Don't buy a new tranny yet! It may be the speed sensor which got dirty.

Thanks for the replies. I am waiting for more info from my sister. She lives 7 hours away so I don't have the car here for easy diagnosis. I'll see if we can figure out what code it was and whether it is related to emissions or it really is a tranny issue.

A check engine light (CEL) ON indicates a problem with emissions control, not tranny problems. Thus I don't trust that dealer or shop, get a second opinion.

Usually tranny problems are associated with a flashing arrow on the dash and poor shifting.

Your '95 has an on board diagnostic computer that can read the codes that are triggering the CEL. Buy a Haynes manual and learn how to read your own codes.

I should add that it is an auto tranny and has not given us any problems yet.

Does anyone know if an auto tranny from a 95 850 turbo will work with a na 850 engine? I see one for sale in the classifieds. Thanks.
