Anybody know if a locksmith or generic key cutting place can copy my Volvo ignition key, or if it's only possible at a dealer. Thanks.

98 has no chip. You may want to order a replacement lock cylinder(it comes with 3 keys) for about 50.00. The cylinders have a bad habit of going bad (see posts on this board!). Better to replace before it's a problem (or at least have it available, takes a week to order from dealer). Dealer will have to order it but it will come with same key for your car.

You can't just get the cylinder for the 98 V70. It is the whole unit that surrounds the steering column, that you would need to buy. And, yes they do fail. I replaced mine at 70k miles, and had to by the entire unit, which was $110 at the dealer, but only took three days to get, and came with only one key.

I checked in our area and the locksmith wanted $30 and the Dealer wanted $20. The locksmith said the blanks are expensive and the machine is also expensive. My key does not have the chip on it. Also the dealer was concerned that it would fit and will redo it if it don't. the locksmith would not do the same

Thanks Ron. How can you tell if your key has a chip in it?

I don't really know. mine is flat and cut on two sides. american cars have the chip on the side of the key. I would think the dealer could tell
