rattle in back seat 850 1995

Have a maddening rattle in the back seat of my 1995 850 turbo sedan. Sounds like its right around the seat belt gizmo on the rear shelf. Pulled the trim off the rear shelf and the trim around the door but could find nothin' loose. Sounds like intermittant, gentle tapping of meddle on meddle. Occurs at all speeds and does not take hardly any bumpiness to induce. Seems a tad worse when its cold. Have not had a chance to have an adult ride in the back to pinpoint the noise. Anyone had similar problems?

Yes... annoying thing; I have the same problem and it seems to be loosen upholstery on the back side (trunk facing side) of the rear seats (originally the thin but quite hard upholstery is bonded with kind of double sided tape to the seat frame; (altrough i have 850 estate i think the seats are pretty much similar)
Try also to look around the integrated child seat/armrest;

If you have a sunroof, it could be the plastic inner panel. I heard a similar sound and thought it was in the rear deck but it is the sunroof panel when in the open position.

It's usually the latch that secures the seat back, and it's usually on the right rear. We've been wrapping electrical tape around the "bar" and lubing the release/catch. Maybe yours is the same problem that we've had these complaints about...so

Hope this helps,

Chris

Chris,

A couple of inches of electrical tape did the trick on the bars for the noisy latches. Actually both sides were rattling...the driver's the most. All quiet now. Also removed the fiber board in the trunk on the passenger side after tapping it and hearing a suspicious, but dull, rattle. Found about eight inches of cable hanging loose in the cavity between the steel side of the trunk and the fiber board. Seems to be some kind of stock cable for the cd player in the truck that was not used. (Another cable -- the one to the cd player -- threaded down under the back seat by the fuel pump access.) An intriguing find that was, I think, part of the problem. The adapter at the end of the spare cable was whacking directly against meddle. Anyway, thanks for the tip. Worked great.

John

Thanks Chris. Have fiddled with the seat latches on both sides already with not results. But will try your tape trick and see what happens.

John
