intercooler freezing 850

After some extended time outside in subzero temps, my 855 turbo would hardly go over 10 mph. I talked to the local dealer, they said the intercooler was freezing up, and they mentioned an install kit to introduce EGR? into the intercooler. Has anybody had this problem and had a successful remedy? Any help would be great. Thanks.

intercooler freezing 850

This just happened to me this week end. I was unable to start the car at all. Finally I succeeded to make some of the ice melt with a heat gun and I let the car idle for some time (30 min?) with the heater off. I think that the heat from the radiator will help it to dry...

But the solution about bypassing the intercooler seems to be good. Did you experience some pinging from the engine without the intercooler?

thanks

No I havn't noticed any pinging or lack of performance. I wouldn't leave the intercooler bypassed for the summer months though. I use low octane fuel.

I did run up and down the highway using the turbo very agressively after bypassing the intercooler and then felt the hose going to the intake. It wasn't even warm.

Great.

With the cold weather of the next month I would like to try your 'bypass surgery'. Do you need additionnal tubing or you just turn the rubber elbow of the TB to connect to the turbo 'S' shaped metal hose?

thanks a lot.

What I did was to disconnect the rubber hose from the metal s shaped pipe that runs from the turbo and over the top of the engine. This rubber hose goes to the bottom of the intercooler. I then disconnected and removed the plastic hose that comes from the top of the intercooler and goes to the TB rubber hose. I had to cut the metal s shaped pipe that comes from the turbo ( aluminium). I tried to find the best section to cut it so that I would be able to rejoin it in the spring with a small section of rubber hose. From the cut section of metal pipe I ran a spring reinforced ( radiator hose) down to a nylon right angle plumbing fitting and into the TB hose. I will have to look to see what all of the hose and fitting diameters are. If you put your e mail on this brickboard I can send you a picture of the finished job.

Yes. My solution was to do a bit of plumbing and bypass the intercooler during the winter months. I did this last winter and so far so good this winter. I reconnect the intercooler in the spring.
