'96 850 occasionally dies whilst idling, at lights, in p-lots etc 850

G'day,

Have an irritating problem with my 100K '96 850. Occasionally (no real pattern) idle seems to get erratic, shift up arrow comes on, and the engine dies. No Check engine light or codes. The shift up arrow light does not always come on when it is doing this.
Have changed... plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor. Worked fine for two days... and now is doing the same thing again. I have a decent 43psi at the fuel rail. Have read other post claiming the temp sensor could be the culprit... have checked it with a meter and all seems good and it seems to be reading fine. The vehicle does seem to do it more so after driving along at lower speeds, constant throttle... but it can also happen at freeway speeds.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Curly

under the battery tray is the auto transmission shift sensor and a fuel relay. Both can become corrorded and give bad electric impulses

Check the altenator output. Also check the OBD codes, there will be some to read and point you to the real problem.

Alternator output is good, there are absolutely no codes whatsoever. I keep checking just in case.... but to no avail.
Could it be a faulty coil maybe?

        RPM sensor maybe???

I had a problem on mine w/ the CMP sensor but it was throwing that code. Another thing which is on the earlier models is the RPM sensor is very close to the coil output and can cause stalling issues. Or fuel filter too, I had all 3 looked at and now no more stalling :-) but more problems arise yay!
