I mounted mine in the glove box (an Alpine S630).

It fits perfectly and was a very easy install, and best of all, it sounds excellent !

Crutchfield sells the changer and cable adapter together for $249. They were out of stock on the adapter last month when i was looking, so i bought it locally, but they have it back in now.

If you drill a hole in the back of the glove compartment big enough for the connector to go through (hole saw), when you remove the radio you should be able to feel around and grab the cable to avoid having to disassemble any more of the dash.

You need to connect a constant 12 volt source to the changer adapter. On my 94' 850, it was on a red wire on the top row of the radio connector (not the fatter red wire with the yellow stripe on the lower row).

With mine istalled in the glove compartment, i didn't use the long cable from the changer at all, the adapter cable was the perfect length for a clean install.

I use the pockets on the seatbacks for the stuff that used to be in the glove compartment.

I had my changer mounted in the glove box about 3 years ago. I don't miss the loss of storage and access is excellent. There are lots of other spots for the service manual and maps. Who actually keeps gloves in the glove box? I thought about the rear but I know the extra hassle will mean that I would have been listening to the same music a lot longer. The floor under the seats would be another hassle and I worried about wet carpets in the winter. Cheers!

I mounted mine on the removable panel to the immediate right of the
rear hatch. (It tucks in there quite nicely) Cabling routes under the
passenger side lower dash (3 screws to remove) under the door sills and
the B pillar. Total time to install @ 1 hour.
To reduce chance of theft, I covered my changer with a black touque.
Okay, I'm a Canadian - eh.

I'm looking at a 1997 Volvo Accessories brochure, for the 850, which shows an accessory compartment located in the wagon's rear left floor. The compartment looks like it comes with a flip-up door/cover.

Has anyone ever seen this accessory in real-life ?

I just bought a '98 V70R that is loaded and has this option. The 6-disk is mounted vertically in the rear compartment. It's labeled Volvo but I suspect it's made by Alpine since the cartridges are the same as an old one I had laying around.

BTW, it seems like overkill having a 3-disk changer in the dash and a 6-disk in the back, but if you want all 9 disks you own available at any time...

I don't know what the rest of the board thinks, but I'll tell you that most people mount the CD chnager unit under the passengers seat. My wife's wagon is no exception, but I think it is not the best after all, as in the rare occasion there is a rear passenger they tend to kick it around a bit, and dirt gets in there quite easily, which I'm sure will lead to a malfunction one day (hasn't happened yet, touch wood!). Although I don't have an A-RATE spot to give you, thought I'd just tell you where NOT to put it.

I have a 95 and I mounted mine under the dash on the passenger side. I bought a pioneer unit that did not fit into the glove box (where I originally wanted). I used the included hardware and had it installed in about 2 hours (mostly because I kept going back into the house to warm up). There was plenty of room to route the wires and store the excess and all that. It does not impinge on the passenger's leg room at all, and it is still accessible to the driver for red-light changes.

Underseat and rear installations are harder and not as accessible, I think. I am going to investigate modifying the center console so that I can possibly put it down inside there.
